As ever the club mounted a Christmas Party, once again at the Merrychest Café which is still looking smart after its extensive refurbishment just before last year's party. A rock disco was laid on by the dynamic duo of Lee Sykes and Steve Romeril who have done us proud many times before.
We had secured for the evening (and at rather short notice but that's another story) the services of some local musicians going by the name of "Blues Power", comprising vocals, guitar, bass, drums and harmonica. Though they played a broad range of very capable delta-style blues (early Clapton, Robert Johnson etc.) there were more than a few of us who had been hoping for a more fast-paced, toe-tapping and danceable selection of tunes. It's not for nothing that some members are collectively known as the "Bexley Triumph dance team" (appearing at a rally, gig or party near you in the coming year).
For that reason the band were met with polite applause from a largely seated audience and it was down to the disco to serve up the hip-swinging, head-shaking sounds between and after the band's sets. As well as the disco, to raise money for our Toy Run beneficiaries there was the customary raffle towards the later part of the evening. I'm not sure who won what but I'm afraid this year I went home empty handed.
Still, it was great to meet up with so many members and their partners and get into the Christmas spirit (ahem!). Many thanks are due to Lee and Tracey Sykes for all their work in organising and publicising the night and to everyone else who helped out.
